Closing the Gap - Connecting Employers

The www.closing-the-gap.ca website is a one-stop resource for the Closing the Gap project that was undertaken in 2004 and 2005. This research and consultation process was designed to identify strategic directions to improve the employment outcomes of people with disabilities.

The project was a labour market partnership co-ordinated by Stuart-O'Hara Inc. Knowledge Management Services. An advisory panel representing a wide range of stakeholders has been active throughout the process. Persons with disabilities, employers, service agencies and community organizations participated in the work.

There were five elements to the project:

  1. A literature review identifying challenges and effective practices both domestically and internationally.

  2. Interviews with individuals and organizations to validate key findings and explore options for effective actions.

  3. Surveys of 150 employers and 50 service agencies to obtain quantitative and qualitative data about issues related to employment of persons with disabilities.

  4. A roundtable of persons with disabilities, frontline agencies and government representatives to share information from the research and consultation process in November, 2004.

  5. A two-day forum with representatives of employers and agencies from the Toronto area was held in September, 2005.
